Identity theft on the same network -- are others at risk?

Solution
Your computer is off the suspect list - it is most likely that your card was cloned so that a physical copy of it was presented in Poland to pay for goods or services. This can happen if you part with the card, even if it's only to put it into an ATM or other machine which has been adapted to make copies of all the cards used in it. it may also be that a crook working in a store or petrol station cloned the card.

Never part with your card - not even to barstaff or a waiter. If they can see the three digit number on the back, they can buy anything on the Net. Sadly, some stores, including Amazon don't even bother with that number so the information on the front of the card is enough for a crook to buy goods with your card...

hey FALC0N, i'm glad to meet.

so if it happened by someone stealing garbage out of my garbage can, then the other people on the same network as me, that also use the same garbage can, also safe then.

but if a hcker was the culprit, then the other people are in danger --
is this what you were saying?

but if it wasn't a hcker, and it was instead by a phishing phone scam, online transactions, swiping a card through a small hand held credit card reader to complete a sale transaction, a local business where a credit card was handed to, or a computer related thing, then the other people on the same network as me are probably safe, but could be in danger (20 %)?

Your question makes no sense in its present form and you're also asking it in two places. It is unlikely anyone in the same network as you would have their system hacked - the are more likely to have better protection than you have.

Either, plese make it clear what you think has happened to you or stop posting about it.

Saga Lout, I'm glad to have met you;)

identity theft happened to me. there were 3 individual separate charges on my credit card, totaling $221.96 in a hair salon in Poland. i'm not exactly sure how it happened, as there are several ways that this can happen.

my computer doesn't show any sign of infection or suspicious activity. another person's computer that is on the same private network as me, did show signs of rather strange behaviour. however, they have since then reinstalled the system; yet, i heard that if it had been a hcker, then they will now know your vulnerabilities, so that you can become the target and successful comprise of your computer again; so i am trying to figure out how to change my computer so that it no longer is set up the same where it could become comprised again -- if it had been (i don't really have any "proof", just VERY strange behavior that was exhibited on another person's computer that is on the same private network as me) -- where 2 hidden malware were found, and then after 16 security programs later, who also found a hidden trojen which none of the other 15 security programs could find, sweeping their computer from corner to corner will a full array of anti rootkits, anti malware, and anti virus programs.

it looked like some unknown "server" had been installed on their computer, but they never use an "irc client" or a separate "browser", nor do they play multiplayer games. other people suspected that it was "benign", stating that it may have been installed as a package of programs by installing a game; despite the fact that the identity theft happened only several days after/less than a week since the strange things were noticed on their computer. however, nothing harmful has happened to them.

Was the total stolen all in one hair salon or spread around? Has your card company accepted liability and refunded you?

my friend Saga Lout (may i call you "friend"?), i most humbly appreciate your help,
and am really glad to have your reply. thank you bro!!!!:D

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

you are the best computer person so far at the diagnostic process.
you know something, your really good at analyzing stuff.
thats cool. i too am good at diagnostics, but that is only for general computer related stuff;
however, when it comes to "networking", i am only, shamefully, just a beginner:na:

"Was the total stolen all in one hair salon or spread around?"
all at the same hair salon on the same day, but the fourth attempt was blocked -- otherwise it would have been 4.

"Has your card company accepted liability and refunded you?"
all money has been refunded.

The police have already been contacted and a police report for identity theft has been made. and equifax has been informed as well. my bank has been notified and a fraud report has been filed. if i contact the FTC (since they haven't been contacted yet because i didn't know if i needed to as all the other steps have been made), do you think anything else besides this be done?

sincerely,
my most humble warm regaurds,
