I plan to have a new gaming rig for 1440P 60 fps max/ultra settings.

Is it overkill ? or worth the investment.

Worth it but whats your budget? Plus 290 gt too many driver and heat issues. Go 780.

my budget is for this 1440p gaming rig is around $2600 USD.

MSI Z87 G45 Gaming + i5-4670k
Gskills Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x4gb kit
WD Blue 1tb
Samsung Evo 250gb Amazon
Corsair RM850 850w 80+ Gold
Corsair Obsidian 750D
Samsung ODD ~
Windows 7 OEM ~
Qnix QX2710 Evolution ii 27inch PLS Panel 1440p

I haven decided whether should i get a rog sound card. Currently i have Swans M50W.

Suggeat you go 780. If u want more horsepower and u want to go ultra and lil future proofing 780ti. Anything after dt is overkill unleas ur doing designing and cad in which case a titan will come to your aid but again tad overkill.
