CPU Temp reaches 97c while gaming

Hello everyone,

Recently I have installed the CoreTemp and noticed the fact that my CPU temp reaches to 97c while gaming, normally it stays on 45c. That happened when I was playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Metro: Last Light.

2 months passed since I bought a Zotac 650ti boost 2GB, 450w TT lightpower PSU, TT V4 chassis and 4 gigs of ram and upgraded my previous system (i5-2310 with intel Dh61ww, 4gb ram). As I have never built a pc of my own, I took my previous system in the shop and the rig maker did the rest. As far as I noticed, he neither added any thermal paste nor removed the older one above my processor. that time I was ignorant about the importance of thermal paste.

Usually temp here in Bangladesh remains quite high. Today is 26c, 30-33c will be the average temp for us after 20-30 days.

I am suspecting two reasons behind the high temp, not applying new thermal grease and the rig maker might not install the stock cooler perfectly.

In this case what should I do?

1) just remove the old thermal paste and apply a new one? or,
2) buy a Hyper 212 Evo for my processor and also apply new thermal paste?

What do you think?

(Forgive me if you find difficulties in understanding my post because my bad English and I may not explain the problem clearly.)

hey xavier,

I agree with ashy. Your cpu temps are very high. I have a 2400 which is pretty much the samecpu as yours but just works at a slightly higher clock.
Since I am from India, I can relate to the temps over at your place and I can tell you that even in our summers (35-36) ambient room temps without an ac, I never see my cpu hitting even 75+ with stock cooler under load.

I am fairly certain that your heat sink has come loose. You can buy some thermal compound like arctic silver as5 and reapply it on the heat sink after cleaning off the old compound. However you need not go with an aftermarket cooler like the 212 evo. A properly seated stock cooler would do the job.

Thank you bro, I got it. I have to check my stock cooler installation and apply thermal paste first. Then I should decide whether I really need an aftermarket cooler or not.

satyamdubey and AshyCFC,

My temperature problem has been solved. I didnt need an aftermaket cooler afterall. I just added a little Thermal Paste and placed the stock cooler myself. Now temp doesnt cross over 77c even I play Splinter Cell Blacklist in maxed out settings.

Thanks to both of you. You both are great!
