Netgear WNDR3700 - Why can't I get on the 5GHz band?

None of my devices see the 5GHz SSID even though it is broadcasting. In fact, the only differences in the setup between the 5GHz band setup and the SSID on the 2.4GHz is the 5GHz SSID name and the fact that the 5GHz SSID is broadcasting.

What do I need to do to use the 5GHz band with any devices?

Solution
Supposedly the 5S at least has 5GHz WiFi. Your laptop probably doesn't, and same with the old tablet and kindles. 5GHz tends to be one of the faster things to go on cheap stuff.

5GHz signals dissipate faster. If you're on the edge of coverage, it's possible they're simply not getting to you.

I know that I was having trouble with Android devices not noticing 5GHz traffic unless it was on channels 36-44 (IIRC). Try changing the channels around.
I have a two year old gateway laptop with a B960 processor in it. An Acer A500 Android tablet from around 2010. Various Kindles with the newest being 2 years old.

I have just left the 5GHz band disabled since I got the router a couple of years ago since nothing seemed to attach to it anyhow. At that time, my primary goal was to get the whole house on gigabit for hardwired connections. The 2.4GHz band has been running fine.

Do you know if iPhone 5Ss and 5Cs could utilize the 5GHz band by chance? I have a couple of those in the house as well as an iPad mini?
