Hi,
My (dinosaur) rig is overdue for an upgrade. It is perfect for everything I need except for BF4. I'm on a $300 or less budget so would appreciate any advice on what to upgrade first and for what.

Current specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6580 @ 3GHz
GPU: Radeon HD 7850 2GB DDR5
RAM: 8GB DDR2
Motherboard: Gigabyte X48-DQ6
HDD: WD 1TB

Thanks

Solution
for BF4 a true quad would be better, i.e. an i5, 4770K would be good, any matx Z87 ideally. if not then the lesser chipsets will work and you can use a lower I5 chip, i.e. not a K. BUT you'll regret it for the extra $50.

I think 13thmonkey meant to say an "i5 4670k" instead of a 4770k. But either of those would be awesome and set you up for a good few years. But with your budget, try looking for last years Ivy Bridge CPU's or even the Sandy Bridge range. Both are fantastic chips and will still server you amazingly for years.
An i5 3570k is still considered the #1 CPU for gaming. The slightly older but just as good 2500k would also be an amazing chip.

Hope this helps

P.S. When you upgrade your MoBo as said above you will need new DDR3 RAM, which is no biggy. 4GB would probably do you for most games, and you could add an extra 4GB to make 8GB in a few months. Also 1333MHz or 1600Mhz will be perfect there is NO need at all to go for higher than that.

Indeed. Why they changed the second number to a "6" on the i5's but didn't with the i7's I don't know :-\

And yeah the 3570k is an awesome chip. I still have my one sitting here in case I need it for anything =)

Thank you both for your help. I went for a deal on a 4670K + Asus z78 a combo + Ram and I busted my initial budget! The 3570K was about $10 cheaper by the way. Anyone wants a deal on 8 GB of Good DDR2?

I can't believe the difference in performance I'm getting now.

:bounce: That is a fantastic setup for gaming, it will server you very well for quite a few years.
You can also think about overclocking in the future to boost the performance even more. It is fairly simply to do with modern components and safe (As long as you do your research and follow some experienced guild lines like what you will find in the overclocking sticky thread on the forum.)
It will only cost you a small amount for a decent aftermarket cooler like the CM Hyper 212 Evo, and a few hours of reading.
But that's for another day. Maybe think about a second 7850 for crossfire instead =D Now that will be a noticeable improvement in games.

Anyway, glad you got the help you wanted and now have a cracking rig to enjoy.
Cheers

Good job, felt the same when I went from Q9950 to 3570k with the same card, it felt unleashed.

You did this in a few hours?
