Hi all.

I've been having an issue with Windows Explorer taking up a huge load of memory and usage lately. The memory ranges from 25,000-58,000, and the CPU from 0-50 at any given time. Whenever I view my processes, I can see four different explorer.exe's. This is strange to me. I've checked their file locations and ran a couple of scans to determine if it was a virus, and indeed it is not. I'm no computer expert either, so I really don't want to meddle with system settings without professional advice. I've ran simple things such as System Diagnostics and Resource Monitor, but to no avail as well. It's useful to know that last night, when I restarted my computer, it ran a disk check by itself and showed this message: "Recovering orphaned file xyz". Also, I cannot do any safe mode boots because I am using an external screen, and cannot view the laptop's screen to access anything. What can I do to fix this problem?

Neither I am a computer expert, but the HDD might be slow, and the HDD may bogged trying to find little broken files. I need the RPM and SATA bus speed of the HDD.

Clean the registry, and DEFRAGMENT the HDD.

The files may be spewed all the way round the HDD - the system has to ask the HDD to spin up and down every platter finding different parts of files. This takes many resources and a lot of time.
