Like the title states, I currently have the FX-8350 running at 4.5ghz @ stock voltage on Windows 7 Ultimate. It's running great at the moment, but I have read that Windows 8.1 is able to utilize all 8 cores much more efficiently than Windows 7, thus resulting in better overall as well as gaming performance?

How much truth is in these claims, and is it worth the upgrade?

Thanks!

Solution
There is a boost in performance, however you probably wouldn't utilize all the cores even if the OS allowed.

You'll mainly see improvements in video editing and such, not so much for gaming.

I run 8.1 and in my opinion if you were fresh installing an OS, get 8.1. If you already have 7 and everything works great, there's not much reason to upgrade.

It is true that Windows 8 will utilize the cores BETTER, not necessarily to their maximum potential. This mainly applies to the FX series.

In my experience, 8 or 8.1 is, as far as desktop usage with classic shell, significantly faster. Games on the other hand, I would say best case scenario is maybe a 5% improvement. Realistically, I haven't noticed any discernible difference.

My system is an 8350 @ 5.1Ghz, Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, R9 290 @ 1250/1600, Kingston Hyper X 3K 120GB SSD and 16GB of Crucial1866 DDR3.
