Convert VGA cable to DVI?

OK, so today I picked up a 17 inch flat screen DELL, which has a permanently attached VGA cable.

I don't have the money to get an adapter right now, money is too tight to even give up 10-15 bucks for an adapter.

SO I was wondering, would it be possible to chop off the VGA plug, and wire up a DVI-I connector to the VGA cable. I figure if the DVI-I to VGA adapters just adapt the pins from the DVI-I Port, and sends the VGA and synch signals to the vga side.

So would I be able to wire up the vga cable to the DVI cable by connecting the wires that enable vga output? Essentially its a DIY DVI-I to VGA connector.

P.S : I know well enough what a DVI-I connector looks like, as it has the four extra pins for VGA/Analog output.

it should work but really then you're taking the end off the monitor for now reason and destroying a dvi cable in the process. most used or little pc places would probably sell you an adapter for a few bucks. post an ad on craiglists to swap a dvi cable for an adapter. lol.

i'm all about DIY but only when I have to and taking the end off a monitor when an adapter would work seems silly.

I really wish I had the money to buy an adapter, but since the computer I picked up might just work, I might use that as the TV computer since the video card on it has VGA and DVI for the Monitor I found.

Another thing I could probably do is splice the DVI cable end into the VGA cable, so it'll essentially be compatible with VGA and DVI-I, so long as the video card and monitor play nice.

I am sure an actual solution has been found, but for future onlookers, I found this link useful: http://www.instructables.com/community/DVI-to-VGA-Conversion-on-a-Budget/
