Can the CPU show wrong temperature? Over 120 C (262 F)

Hello!
I installed Hyper 212 evo cooler few days ago on my AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor.
Everything went good, I checked the temperature and was around 30 C - 35 C for the CPU and the System on idle.
Today, I checked the temperature and it says 120 C = 262 F and the system temperature is exactly the same. I used CPUID HWMonitor and ASUS AI Suite to check the temperature, and both programs give the same temperature result.
Can this be true? I mean with so much high the PC should shut down right?
If it is false, what is causing this faulty information? Anything damaged in my Hardware?
Need your help please.

Its just a known error dude. Its in the motherboard temp sensors.

This isnt to be a smartass, its just way shorter then posting the google link lol

edit: I've never heard of a way to "fix" it. Only thing would be drivers, bios revision or simply buying a new board. If everything is up to date, not really anything you can do other than that.

Asus boards have known issues. Thats not anything to worry about. Google that temp and see what pops up ;)

edit: fwiw, if your computer was running at 262F you would know it! I believe that number is just a fail safe (Fail high vs low for safety devices to work properly).

UPDATE: Even after restarting the temp was at 120 C .. What solved it was shutting down the PC, now the CPU reads 34 C and the system reads 30 C.
Thanks for posting your replies.
