Hey everyone,

I need some help on what gpu to get.

Mostly I play MMORPGs and strategy games, like Civilization V or Sim City and never play FPS games. I'm planning on going 7680 x 1440 and havedone a lot of research, but coould not come to a conclusion on what GPU will do the job. Problem is here where I live I can not buy one and return it to get another if I don't like it, so I have to get it right on the first try.

I have definitely no need for Ultra settings. Although I will use it if I can, I will settle for high settings with no AA, and maybe medium settings if I need. What is most important for me is the quantity of pixels on screen. As for FPS, there is no need to be above 60. Anyhting above 30 is OK to me.

Acording to my budget and the prices available here, I can afford any of these cards at the moment:

- GTX 770 4GB - U$ 640
- GTX 760 4GB (will SLI later) - U$ 480
- R9 290 (no aftermarket cooling available yet) U$ - 640
- HD 7970 6GB - U$ 792

My concerns:

- Is the 760 alone capable of driving such high resolution? If so, I could use a lower wattage PSU, and save some money.

- I've read about the new aproach of AMD to Xfire, using the PCIe instead of the bridge. So will the 7970 be a bad choice if I plan o Xfiring later? Also do I need 6 GB or 4GB will suffice?

- I live in a hot country. Very hot sometimes, like 45 °C on peak summer but most frequently arround 30 ºC. Will the R9 290 be too hot, hence, unabble to reach full performance? I recognize I could game always with the air conditioning on max, but I woud like to be able do without it.

- If the 290 is the best choice, should I wait for the aftermarket cooled cards?

Thanks for your help!

Solution
short answer:

wait for the aftermarket cooling for the 290. and i am sure a single 760 does not have enough horsepower to run 7680x1440

I would SLI the 770. Especially because of the resolution you're planning to play on. Even if you wait and grab the R9-290, you will have to end up XF that due to your high resolution and I doubt you want to spend that much!

stay away from AMD right now the bitcoin miners have inflated the value of those cards... civ 5 and SimCity will easily get maxed out with a 760 gtx sli even at 3x monitor 1440. for future proof go 770 4gig. heck with the prices your showing get a 780 or 780ti. Where are you looking at prices for the nvdia cards? they seem way to high? try newegg or tigerdirect.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all the replies!

As for your question about where did those insane prices came from: I live in Brasil, and those are the very best prices you can get arround here.

I did a comparison with the prices in Amazon and, it sadly is true: the 770 4GB is really overpriced here. I guess Nvidia has a better reputation arround here, so the stores take advantage of that fact.

I made a compilation from all the answers and and still have some questions:

From what you guys said, the GTX 760 will only do the job if it is in SLI. I was planning on SLI later, cause it will require a more powerfull PSU, wich as you can imagine are not that cheap arround here. If I could get by whith just one and SLI later, this would be my choice, but since I will have to SLI from the beginning this does not seems a good choice specially because I feel there will be not very much room from upgrades later as I will only be able to tri-SLI as I guess quad SLI on this card probably won't scale well.

- The 770 seems a good choice because it could drive the resolution I need. Even if I have to step back in some settings, I can get another one later to SLI and get a real good setup. If I can find one at a more reasonable price, this will probably be my choice.

- The R9 290, as for what I had read arround in the net, seemed to be able to drive that massive resolution alone. Heyyscot, you mentioned that the R9 290 would need Xfiring to drive that resulution, If that's true, I won't go down this route because Xfiring them would need a 1000W PSU, and those are priced roughtly at U$ 350 arround here.

I just got curious cause no one mentioned the HD 7970 with 6 GB. At first this was my primary choice because I saw some videos on youtube and the guy was playing on 7680 x 1440 with just one card and above 30 FPS with decent settings.

Electricchead22, you mentioned the 780 Ti. My previous research showed that 3 GB Vram could become a bottleneck at the resulution I need. Can you confirm anything on that topic?

If I can get cheaper 770, I will probably go down that route and use just one, keeping some money to SLI it later. Even if I have to step down on some settings, I'm OK with that, at least for some time.

If I can't get the 770 on a cheaper price, will probably try and get a R9 290 TRI-X from Saphire, although they are not available at stores here at the moment.

If I can't get a cheaper 770 and get some evidence that the R9 wont handle the resolution I need, I wil have to resort to the 7970, since its the only single card I've seen on 7680 x 1440.

Thanks again for the help. If you guys have more to say, please do, any further opinion will be very much appreciated.
