Why does my computer get stuck at "update" so and so when I shut my computer down

I was having this problem, then I unplugged my usb cord from my printer and it fixed it. Try unplugging anything usb related from your mobo then shut down. Obviously leave the mouse and keyboard in as long as they have drivers and are properly recognized.
I saw this problem when I went into BIOS and my printer was automatically put as the #1 boot device.
