Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my Intel i7 920 and TBGM01 Gateway motherboard from my training wheel days. I've spent a few weeks trying to get this board to enable overclocking to no avail. It's simply a dead end excluding a +~0.333ghz using SetFSB and a hacked BIOS.

So, what kind of hassle should I expect when upgrading to a mobo + CPU combo of:

2nd Gen sandy ?

3rd Gen ivy ?

4th Gen haswell ?

I understand that moving from Intel to AMD warrants reinstalling OS. Will that be the same case moving from an earlier generation to a newer generation?

If you have anything else to contribute regarding swapping to a difference generation CPU + motherboard, please do so!

Thank you for reading.

If ur going to upgrade, upgrade to a LGA 2011 socket, cuz all the other ones are not upgrades compared to the LGA 1366 sockets. plus Core i7 920 is still pretty good. instead of downgrading, you can just get a good mobo that supports LGA 1366 and is OC friendly from ebay or amazon. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H0.XLGA+1366+motherboard&_nkw=LGA+1366+motherboard&_sacat=0&_from=R40

It's good practice to reformat after installing new mobo, but not as necessary as it was before.

I've always done that. But when I went from z68 to z77 (old one died), as an experiment I decided not to.

All I needed to do was uninstall old drivers and install the new ones. Everything worked, device manager recognized everything correctly, games ran perfectly, no BSODs. Windows needed reactivation though. Probably depends heavily on what you are upgrading from/to.

Trust me: I would really like to stay with 1366... but then again I really don't want to fork out $100+ for a board that's semi-dated and used by Joe Shmoe for a few years. I also tend to prefer applications that happen to bottleneck my CPU (from games to multi-tasking).

I am scouring eBay every other hour for a good 1366 motherboard, but until I find something that looks promising for ~$100, I am looking to simply upgrade to a new motherboard + CPU.

LGA 2011 provides a bigger upgrade you say? I've read similar, and thanks for confirming that bit :)

@genome

Hello. Thank you for providing some details. How did you go about uninstalling old drivers? And, did Windows prompt you with all the necessary drivers for your new motherboard, or did you simply have to go through your motherboard's manufacturer?

Just uninstalled through control panel. Downloaded drivers off manufacturer website, installed, up and running in five minutes. Mileage may vary...

Forgot to submit response, sorry.

I see. Thanks for that input - it's good to have an idea, since I've never done a mobo + CPU swap before. I've had my current set-up for a while.
