I have a desktop my brother built in early 2008 that he gave to me. It's mainly held up great considering it's been 6 years but I think the power supply is having issues. Sometimes when I start up the computer the psu will start making a loud grinding noise. I don't know if it's the fan or some part of the psu. I'll hold down the power button and turn it off and wait and turn it back on. It might stop or keep making the noise until I repeat this a few more times. Once it's up and running without the loud grinding it will continue to work just fine. Though once it was running fine today I tried tilting the computer to blow into the back fan on the psu and it started the grinding noise again. I read something somewhere, do you think it is a bearing is loose or something?

Also sometimes when I press the power button to turn the computer on it won't work the first time but it will the 2nd time. It's not because I'm not pressing the button hard enough or anything. Wasn't sure if that was also the psu dying.

I'm thinking about replacing it. My brother said it was a pain to install in the case until he figured out how to unscrew the top of the case or something to fit it in. I'm not sure. It's mounted sideways in the top back right corner. I was thinking of getting another 750W psu but go for bronze certified this time just so it's decent. I can get one for $70 (60 with rebate). How do you tell if a psu is compatibile? Are they all the same size? Do you only need to know if it fits the same cords? I was thinking of getting this one:

I'll list my computer parts. I was going to make it nice and neat in a pcpartpicker link but I can't find half the parts there. I think they don't list them anymore.

I listed the case too in case it needs to fit in a certain size, I wasn't sure. Would that new psu be compatible? Thank you.

yep i can see that is an unique design for mounting/installing the PSU. but it looks like most any would fit. and that is an old PSU (PC P&C) - at least seeing 30 amps on the 5v rail says that to me. and the fan looks . .not so great to begin with:

but i really don't know TBH.

a good 450+ watt PSU will work fine with your specs. the cpu will use ~125 watts and that 5770 about 110 watts.then other stuff - HD, cpu fans RAM but 50 watts will more than cover that -300 watts rounding up.

a little more than you need but its a deal:
XFX Core Edition PRO550W $60.99
Save: $29.00 (32%)...

The psu will start making a loud grinding noise < Usually a fan \ bearing Issue.

Needs to be replaced.

Not replacing could mean damage to other components in the near future.

Thank you qbs and SR-71. I also wanted to make sure; is the power supply I linked, qbs linked and SR-71 linked compatible with my computer? Wasn't really sure how you determine this.

Thank you. Helps a lot. Will be nice to be able to make a solid choice and replace it as soon as I can / need to.
