which motherboard to choose?

Solution
Your first problem is trying to stick with Core 2 Duo. I also have a Core 2 duo, but I'm eagerly waiting to upgrade to a Broadwell quad core cpu. Besides you shouldn't be trying to go "backwards" in technology.

Now if you're trying to replace a C2D motherboard because it was damaged/died, then you need to think about upgrading the system as a whole. Can't afford it? Look for a cheap refurbished 2nd Gen i3 or i5. They're starting to show up on lease return and professionally refurbished. You'll end up paying almost the same as a used C2D motherboard, but it'll blow away a C2D in performance. Slap in a SSD and you'll be dancing circles around any C2D & board.

You're more likely looking at a failed power supply (PSU). The best way is to test it for proper voltage output.
power supply tester
However, there can be several other reasons why your computer is having problems and unfortunately diagnosing it via a forum is extremely difficult.

It sounds like the PSU you added was either under-powered and shuts off, or was defective (which happens). But the only way to know for certain is to swap it with a known good PSU or get a PSU tester. Either way you will know if the PSU currently in the computer is bad.

Unfortunately, I would say no. There are so many options out there for laptops and everyone has different needs and preferences (color, weight, size, key stroke, etc). Without personally knowing you it would be extremely hard. I can give you some advice though.

1. Choose your preferred size, 13", 14", 15", 17" screen sizes (has a direct impact on weight).
2. Choose a desired weight (are you going to school and need to carry it around ALL DAY?).
3. What is the primary function (portable gaming, college, work, etc. Apple vs PC).
4. Cost!!! (How much are you willing to spend. Also ties into Apple vs PC).
5. Go to a store and check it out IN PERSON. It's so important to play around with it first hand. I've bought laptops without doing that in the past and regretted it every time.
6. GO SSD!!! I can't express it enough, you need to experience it in person. SSDs are incredibly fast compared to standard HDDs. But you can buy a replacement SSD for 1/2 or less than if the laptop came with one pre-installed. So choose, SSD pre-installed and spend an extra $100-$200 or buy a SSD, still spend $100-$200, but also have a spare 500GB or 1TB 2.5 HDD backup drive (and void the warranty).
