bandwidth crash with cloud backup software

So confused. Using online backup software. Connection speed drops from ~20mbps to barely 3mbps or worse. Netlimiter indicates backup software is using .221mb upload. Network construct from web is: AT&T 2wire gateway (with DHCP, wireless off), then ASUS RTAC66-u (wireless access point), hub then computer. Computer with backup software is connected via ethernet to hub, hub via ethernet to router, etc. I'm confused.

  1. Your cloud backup software is using all the available upload bandwidth. As such, the TCP return packets aren't getting through properly.

    You may need to limit the upload speed a bit on the backup software.
  2. I installed NetLimiter to monitor upload/downloads by node. The upload rate being measured is 250kb/s. That on its own shouldn't eat my bandwidth, at least looking at this in a mathematical way. Did further testing today by removing the router access point and connected directly to the AT&T gateway. No improvement noted. Wondering now if it's the ISP gateway or my rig.
  3. What's the upload limit on your internet connection?

    TCP needs your computer to send back messages saying the packets have arrived. If those are stuck in the queue behind your uploads for too long, TCP will reduce the throughput of the download until they're all arriving on time.
  4. 1.5 mbps up max. Any solution thoughts? at this point I'm considering buying a NAS versus waiting two months for an initial backup upload.

    If you pause the upload, what does a speedtest say you get?

    Yeah, cloud backups are a pain unless you have a serious internet connection. A NAS is what I did.

  7. If I pause it my bandwidth bounces right back to 20mbps.

I'm tempted to create a DMZ on my gateway (venturing in to stupidity on my part since this is not my area of expertise) to my router and converting the router from an access point to a full router. I have this nagging suspicion that the gateway is the cause of the problem since its old and it's AT&T. This is baseless speculation on my part.

    Could be a low-quality router, though I doubt it.
  10. I'm tending to lean towards Someone with this one. Even a cheap modem or gateway should be able to handle your upload throughput without issue. I have just recently been upgraded at my office from AT&T DSL to AT&T Uverse with a 1.5 Mbps upload. Doing large data transfers (upload) will cause everything to slow down, and I am thinking that the upload speed is just being saturated by your cloud upload. 1.5 Mbps is going to be very slow doing large amounts of upload. At one office here we tested setting up a NAS at their branch office an hour away. Both offices have a 2 Mbps upload speed, and doing daily backups of their data (approximately 2 GB of data changes daily) it would take the entire night to actually backup and sometimes part of the morning still. That's also a lot higher chance of failures happening during the backups due to connectivity trouble.

    How much data are you backing up? In the end it may be more cost effective to go with a NAS if the network throughput won't be feasible for cloud backups.
  11. upstream bandwidth max is 1.5mbps. backup at max tops out at 250k. looking to back up ~400gb files (photography & graphic design).
  12. I think I've reached the NAS conclusion too, but offsite storage would be nice for disaster recovery purposes. Since I barely know networking, i thought I'd reach out to see if i was missing anything after extensive research & troubleshooting. Many thanks for your feedback!!!

    I'd stick it all on an external HDD, then move that off-site. Update once a week or something.

  15. ISP Plan: 20mbps down, 1.5 up
    Speedtest without backup software running: ~close to ISP speeds
    Speedtest with backup software running: previously cited results of sub-4mbps download and sub-1mbps upload.

    Pulled asus router (set up as access point) which made no difference. Considered bridging gateway to router but am concerned about security implications of a dumby like me who is winging it.
