how to open a hard disk in a system that says it needs to be formatted?

My system opens all the pendrives. But when i connect my hard disk it says need to be formatted. what should i do?

If it's an external hard drive, remove from it's enclosure and try it in a third-party enclosure or install it internally if you have a desktop PC.

Connect it to another PC, and try again. If it also cant be opened and there’s no data you want. You can format it. Otherwise, I think your hard drive has been destoried, and then try a data recovery software to retrieve them, such as M3 Format Recovery.

Is there anything useful on this pen drive?
If there is nothing needed, you can directly format it to see whether it can be used functionally again.
But, if there is something important, before the formatting process, you’d better firstly copy off all your information back with some data recovery tool like Recuva, 4Card Recovery, Power Data Recovery and more.
Just select a proper one based on your conditions.
In case of similar problems, you’d better use your drive rightly and always make data backups all the time.
