My router ip was 192.168.1.1 now I see it has changed to 172.16.0.1. I have been having trouble with the internet not connecting to the router with the network showing connected. I did a factory reset on the netgear r6200 router and all was well yesterday now today I couldn't connect. So I went into network and sharing and tried the guest network. Still didn't connect had the yellow triangle over the bar signal on taskbar. Did a ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and am able to get connected now. I then found my ip 172.16.0.1 is of the comcast motorola modem now instead of the r6200's router ip of 192.168.1.1. What should I do? I'm connected now but have no router firewall. Cable modem is a motorola sb6141.

How is the computer connected? Cable or wireless? Is the router properly hooked up to the modem with the WAN port? Make sure the computer is connected to the router with a cable, then do an ipconfig and see what the gateway IP is, that should be the router. Go into the settings and check the WAN port setup and make sure DHCP is turned on, and it's not set to pass though (which makes the modem control the network basically instead of the router).

hang-the-9: I'm connected wireless. Router hooked to the wan port. Went into settings of the router and found the LAN setup using router as DHCP Server. I don't see a setting in WAN setup showing DHCP server option. Just to be sure was I supposed to be in router setup or the modem setup? I have done reset to router with power on and cable from router to WAN port disconnected then powered off. Once restarted I now have the router back with ip 192.168.1.1 and the modem shows as 172.16.0.1 so I guess it reconfigured with the reset. If I understand correctly it's back to original setup. Which puts my network protected by the router again. Is this all I need to be sure of? thanks for your help.
