We wanted to include an ssd drive into my sons new desktop build what will we need to purchase within a reasonable price range?

I would not suggest anything less than a 120GB drive. If he is a gamer, I'd suggest a 250GB SSD since games are pretty large. A 120Gb will hold several games though. As mentioned above the Samsung EVO drives are VERY nice and are very balanced so they are priced well and give great performance. I won't go into the details, but they should deliver for an average consumer for the life of the machine. The Samsung Magician software they come with is also the best among any SSD. Intel comes in second with software offered.

I also always suggest an SSD for OS/APPS and standard HDD for just data storage in all my builds. This cuts down on the writes to the SSD and keeps your data on a seperate drive. I've always practiced this even before SSD's. C: for OS and APPS, D: for DATA

I normally recommend Samsung solid state drives. Samsung ssd's perform exceptionally well and they have a proven track record. Plextor, Intel, and Crucial are also worth considering. Recently SanDisk has been coming on strong with their newest ssd's.

I maintain the ssd database listed in a sticky at the very top of this forum section. Here is the link:

Scroll down to the brands and models you are interested in and follow the links to the technical reviews.

BTW - Current price for the Samsung 840 EVO 256GB model is $156.99 over at newegg.com.

As jay2tall mentioned, you cannot go wrong with a Samsung drive, PRO or EVO would suit your needs. If he is a gamer though, you might want to go with my setup, 256Gb for OS, 128Gb for games, and a Seagate HDD for storage.
