Dare I say it - "limited connection" on Lenovo z510

Hello! I have a brand spanking new lenovo z510 i7 that will not, despite my best efforts, connect to the Internet.

What I've got:

Tp-link wdr3600 running 2.4ghz on channel 3 mixed bg, wep. I get the "this connection is limited" message on wifi and ethernet, even when running latest Ubuntu from a live USB.

What I've tried:

Disabling/enabling atheros card; removing/reinstalling drivers; installing Windows 7 wifi card drivers; changing/removing security on router; rebooting everything like a gazillion times; standing on one leg whilst cursing loudly; flushing and renewing things via command line; loads of other stuff that I'm only likely to recall under torture.

... I've spent hours changing various settings on both router and laptop with no success. Oh, it DOES work when I use my mobile phone as a hotspot but other than that it has not connected to the Internet.

Should I send it back? Is this problem likely to occur again if I get a replacement? Shame because I really like it.

Any new suggestions or opinions gratefully received.

(also posted on cnet)

PS. I'm now running wpa2 with tkip - though I've tried every other flavour of security. Dchp is running and I've assigned a permanent network address. I don't have Mac filtering or anything like that running. My ssid is a reasonable length.

The card is an atheros AR9485.

No, I get the same problem with ethernet.

I'm in uk.

Just bought a tp-link USB LAN and that doesn't work either. Still getting limited connection.

It was on b/g/n to start with and I switched to b/g to see if it helped. No.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply. Am I also conversing with you on CNET or is that someone else?

In answer to your question, everything works with the WDR3600 bar the Z510. So that's two nexus (nexii?) 7s, a nexus 5, a macbook and an ouya box. (And a partridge in a pear tree?) Oh, and the NAS also has a rather good but slightly on off relationship.

Forgive the barrage of images below - I thought it pertinent to attach images of the output when attached directly to the modem as that gets the same limited connection result.

So, Z510-->Echolife HG612 (modem FTTC) #1

#2

Z510-->Wifi WDR3600
]

Z510-->Ethernet WDR3600

If it's not already obvious, I know relatively little about these things (well, the last few days have been a steep learning curve). I am good at following instructions and researching alternative instructions when those don't work, hence why I'm here. So apologies if any of the info I've supplied is extraneous.

Cheers - Sarah.

OK, nobody move, everyone stay just as you are, I think it is working. :)

I'm typing this while connected through the router.

I'm not exactly sure what fixed it but I shall share my last coupla steps.

I followed c0untryb0yfr3sh's advice here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/4389-73-unidentified-network-limited-network -
I've had a similar issue. Not only has it done exactly what yours is doing but it also would come up "Unidentified Network" and allow no connection. The error that windows 8's "Diagnose Problem" gives is "Ethernet does not have a valid IP Configuration".

What is happening is that the Ethernet port is not getting an IP address & Gatway Address from the router.
Here is what worked for me:

1. Lower right hand corner Right Click on your Network Indicator and Select Open Network And Sharing Center
2. On the Left Hand side Click on the Change Adapter Settings
3. Right Click on the Offending Adapter and Select Properties
4. In the Box labeled "This Connection Uses the Following Items" Scroll Down to find "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
5. Select (1 Left Click to Highlight) and Click the Properties Button

Now here is where you need some Info:
A. What is the IP Address of your Router i.e. (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1)?
If you don't know and you have not modified the router before then look up the Default IP for "Your Router Model" on Google or try the 3 examples I used in the question on a computer or WiFi Connected device that is NOT having the Problem. Those are standard. Once you know what it is (you DO Not Need to log into the router) continue to Step 6.

6. Choose "Use the Following IP Address"
Now set it up as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.?.107 (Where "?" equals the Same as your Router IP Address in this position 192.168.?.1)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (This should be default anyway but verify)
Default Gateway: 192.168.?.? (This is where you put in the IP Address of your Router)

Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8 (This is the Google DNS Server and should work Just fine)

7. Now click OK and Then Close the the Properties Window.\

The Network Adapter should Automatically Reset and you now should be online.

This didn't work in itself. I then followed someone's advice somewhere (it could indeed have been someone somewhere somewhere else). I set the router to just broadcast 11g and changed the channel to 11. I have definitely tried changing channel and switching between 11 b/g/n, 11n and 11 b/g, but possibly not just g alone. Oh, one more thing, Windows prompted me to install a security update but I don't think it was that.

Thank you kind internet. You have transformed a rather pretty typewriter into a rather bitchin' laptop. :) :D :)

Oh, but ethernet doesn't work. :/

And I can't connect to the router through the web interface or windows interface (when connected to ethernet) - I get error 651.

Don't get the bunting out just yet! ;)

Yes, it is definitely working. I've assigned and reassigned ip addresses. One of the reasons I favour this router over the naff one my isp gave me is that ip assignment and portforwarding is sooo much easier.
