Hi everyone I am new to the community and I just wanted to ask for some advice on the above three graphics cards. I read the article on the maxwell architecture of the 750 and the upgrades in effeiciency it has over the 650 but I just wanted to describe my current sitation and see what you guys think is the best course of action for me and my wife on upgrading our pc.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE:Within the next month, our budget right now is anywhere between 150-225.

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming will be the most demanding part of this pc and specifically we will be playing Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, BUT we would also LIKE to have the ability to play newer shooters like BF4 at a reasonable level Medium settings is fine. We are not super hardcore into running shooters at ultra high settings. Ultimately we would like to have this graphics unit last us a couple of years before e absolutley have to replace.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: We currently have an EVGA 450 W Power supply and an - 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 [2 DVI, HDMI and VGA adapters]

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)
- 16GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [8x2048]

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: We like New Egg and Tiger Direct (USA

PARTS PREFERENCES:We prefer the Geforce family of cards but we are willing to branch out to AMD or others.

OVERCLOCKING:No

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: We honestly just want a video card that will be a work horse for a couple of years until we do another upgrade. I know that the 660 is MUCH better in terms of performance than the 650 but is the difference going to be tat much noticeable in terms of games that come out later this year and next year? Also should I go for the 2GB versions of these cards? How much does the extra memory play in the performance of the card? I.e. if I got a 1GB 660 over a 2GB 650. And finally, is the 750 GTX Ti better than the 650 in terms of performance or is it just an efficiency thing?

Solution
The 750Ti was honestly a disappointment to me. In terms of performance it runs neck and neck with the 650Ti Boost model. This means it puts it just over the 650Ti and under the 660. The 660 would honestly be the better bet in your scenario. However, I think I'd be a bit concerned with the EVGA 450W power supply. What model specifically is it or could you provide the 12V ratings.

Also to consider. Keep an eye out for the GTX760 prices. Newegg has had the Zotac GTX760 plain vanilla version on sale for $199 a few times. My buddy picked it up when he made his build and that thing runs great. I think it requires a 500W minimum PSU though.

If you want to play the safe route, the GTX750Ti is the way to go as your current 450W would...

If you want to play the safe route, the GTX750Ti is the way to go as your current 450W would run it just fine. If you want to throw in the extra bucks and make the upgrade blow your mind, get a GTX760 + new PSU. You can use both when it's time to upgrade your mobo/cpu/mem. That's the great thing about PC's. I previously had an i7-920 OCed to 4GHz. I actually got $250 on eBay for the CPU/mobo/mem combo. I always upgrade and do so in a way that I know I won't be disappointed. Unless you are really stuck to your budget, go for the gold man.

My "go for the gold" suggestion:

Jay2tall,

I ACTUALLY have an EVGA 500W PSU. I messed up my specs up there.

That is my exact PSU. ALso, my wife is now saying that it may be worth to get the 760 base model as it is not that much of an increase in price from the 660. What do you think? Will my PSU run the 760 or should I just go with the 660?
