My laptop turns off (monitor goes black) when I watch videos or play games. I have looked around on the internet and I've heard lots of things that could cause this. I have ruled out "overheating" the fan works fine and my laptop never get's hot during games or watching videos (I clean out the fan and use a hard surface to use my laptop on)

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030

So, you were monitoring temps when this happens? What were the CPU and GPU temps?

Have you tried reinstalling your graphics drivers?

Hi ihog, yes they're all reading normal temps.. none go over 60

I did re-install my graphics card, funny thing is, it seemed to have changed. When I checked the driver it was "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250" then when it reinstalled (it did it automatically after re-boot) I had this driver installed "ATI ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series" The same but 4200? That suggests an older version? What do you think?
Thanks

Nah, it's just telling you the series instead of the exact card. My 7970 is listed as "Radeon HD 7700 series" on my computer.
