My question is this. What are the pros/cons to upgrading to the new Kaveri APUs VS a R9 270x Graphics card. What I mean is would it be pointless in getting the new APU knowing the graphics card I have is better? My goal is to upgrade my MOBO/CPU but I'm a bit lost as to what's an "upgrade". I'm big into gaming so thats is my ultimate goal. My current dinosaur processor is an Phenom II x4 (Black Edition). It's a bit old, but still runs some of the tops games pretty well. So if anyone has any suggestions, i'm game to listen!

Simple.
If you have a dedicated GPU stay atleast a mile away from AMDs APUs.

I'd suggest an FX 6300 or hell, since you're considering kaveri an i5 4570 + H87 mobo should run around the same price and have TONS more performance.

there is no point in getting the apu, you're GPU is already much better and the cpu side of it hasn't improved much over the last gen.

Kaveri isn't an upgrade to a Phenom II X4. An FX 8320 or an i5 4670k would be though. If not interested in overclocking, a Xeon 1230v3 is an option as well. It really depends on your budget.

The new APU would be a slight upgrade, but you're better off getting an FX like an Asus M5A97 R2 and an 8320, that will be cheaper and much better than a Kaveri. I assume you already have the 270x? Even if you don't, the Kaveri is about equal to a 7770 or 250x at best, while the CPU portion is similar to a 4300 or 760.

Wow thanks for the speedy answers! I had a slight feeling I shouldn't invest into the new APUs. Now I know I won't be. I do already have the R9 270x and it runs amazingly smooth. I'd really like to stick with AMD CPUs as thats all i've ever ran without a single problem. So the FX series is where I'm wanting to aim? And thanks again for the speedy input. :D

FX is AMD's only current series, so yeah, go for that. The 8320 is good, it is an 8350 with a lower factory clock, the 6300 is nice too, but usually within $10 of the 8320. The 4300 is a good CPU, but won't give you great gaming performance.

fx 6300 or fx 8320 is the two you should be looking at then.

I'm buying with the intention of expanding in the future as games get more intense. That first combo you linked, Logainofhades was exactly what I was looking at over @ newegg for about the same price. It looks like thats what I'm going to be rolling with, and thanks vmN for your direct insight.
