can't get hdmi cable to tv to work

i am having trouble on this i plug what i think is a hdmi cable into my laptop to the tv it won't appear my notebook screen on the tv please i need help?

Try this:

Windows Key + P key combo

Arrow over to either Duplicate or Extend
