So I picked up a Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop after my buildings supertenent let me grab it from an apartment she was cleaning out.

Anyways, so I have Windows XP Professional SP3 running on it, seems to be fine with it.

Though since all my computers run Windows 7, and Windows XP is no longer getting updates, I was wondering if it was possible to run Windows 7 on the computer I picked up. That is, I can install it but would it run well enough to play livestreams\youtube and 480/720p videos?

SPECS
Pentium 4 (Malaysia) 2.40GHz (800MHz Bus)
512 MB DDR 1 (Dual Channel mode) @ 800MHz
Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 AGP x8 Video card (128MB)
80GB Hitachi DeskStar (IDE)
IDE DVD Burner

I plan to use this computer as the TV/Video computer that will sit next to my desk, playing TV livestreams from Canada, America, or Britian, or I'll be playing youtube videos on it. Maybe set up a randomized playlist of cartoons, anime and sciency shows.

I dont think that 512mb of ram will be enough. Even with 1GB ram you should try only "starter edition" of windows 7 without any features other then basics. You cant even change background at proporties, you need extra software and so on, it's really simple Windows 7 which gets only around 500-600mb of ram when you start system. I would say that 1.5/2gb is minimum, gpu would handle videos good as in XP as long as you can find drivers. That cpu would do fine since I have it on 4th extra old machine.
