My external hard drive is showing in device manager, is also makes the beep noise and lights up when attached; it used to have a pop up window when i plugged it in asking whether I wanted to view the files, that no longer happens, it also isn't displayed under my computer or device management, I'm on windows 8 but the problem started on my windows 7, it does the same thing on other computers

What if it doesn't allow me to format or partition it?

I encountered the same problem. Checked devices - drive now showed up as BKUP drive. Tried everything - checked settings for File Recovery if used, Recovery, and then I remembered that I had Windows Restore set up. Picked an earlier recovery point - drive was back as a USB external hard drive. Formatting the drive would have erased everything; couldn't mount the drive per say - this is some nuance in Windows 8.1 that I can't quite explain.

The problem is as Anand M S said, "It is NOT showing in DISK MANAGEMENT, so how can you make the HDD recognised by the PC? I to fitted an internal 500GB brand new 2nd HDD to my HP Pavilion t770.uk. This HDD shows up in DEVICE MANAGER, but not in DISK MANAGEMENT, or the BIOS. I cannot therefore initialise it, and allocate it a drive letter. Any idea's anyone?
