I am interested in setting up a TV tuner in addition to my normal card...so I can record OTA shows. The tuner will not be hooked to an output device. Can I install a TV tuner card in addition to my normal video card...and be able to select which one I want to use at a given time...or can they operate simulatneously automatically?

My gaming is not too intensive (haven't bought a game in about 3 years), but I do some video editing. don't know if the TV tuners these days would outperform the 4850 and therefore make this a moot point.

here are my specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
Proc: Core 2 Duo E8500
OS: XP SP3
Current video card: Radeon 4850

Thanks in advance!

Hi arfows,

A TV tuner would work simultaneously if you have the room for it on your motherboard. I've had one myself when I had a GTX 550Ti and a HD TV Tuner to watch football on the PC. You don't need to do anything particularly special other than install drivers when you get the TV Tuner.

As for using it in video editing it would not do anything like that at all, it is not a gaming card or graphics card like the Radeon 4850. It will look after TV and that is all.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!! How about the old ATI all in wonder cards? How does their functionality compare to the 4850 and current TV tuners?

The All in wonder cards should be avoided. They simply are cards that have the video card and TV built on. The functionality is the same as having them seperate, but unless you're short on space, theres no point in trying an all in wonder since when you want to upgrade your graphics card you would be removing the TV card at the same time. By keeping them seperate you can replace one without the other. Plus, do they still make all in wonders, arent most of those things ancient???

Personally I run 2x video cards (7950's in Crossfire) and 2x TV Tuners (Hauppauge 1250 and 2250). Everything works great fo me, no issue gaming, while watching or recording live tv.

Thanks to both responders! Looks like I'll go with the 2250 or the AverTVHD Bravo or Duet
