so lets say i wanna get a new pc
i have a lot of stuff on my hdd that can't be replaced
now i get the concept that if you want to change the motherboard you are gonna be stuck with re-installing you windows copy
but what if i bought a new pc and used this hdd as a secondary
is it gonna work or not?
and since the old one got some system files and cofig files, is it gonna affect the other hdd by any way possible?

another question
if i just wanted to change the motherboard and keep the same hdd
what is the most efficient and safe way of doing that

Solution
i have a lot of stuff on my hdd that can't be replaced

This all depends on exactly what 'type' of stuff we're talking about.

Docs/Pictures/Music/etc? No problem
Installed applications? Problem.

Applications can always be replaced/reinstalled. And will need to be reinstalled.
For your other critical stuff, have it elsewhere and offline during any major hardware/software change.

You can always use the old HDD for a secondary drive. But any pgms installed on it will more than likely need to be re-installed. If you want to try it, you can sometimes get lucky with the Win7 installation working well enough to boot when installed with a new MB if the old board was somewhat similar as to drivers, etc. If it boots, Win7 will install its necessary default drivers and have you reboot. You can then run something like CCleaner to clean up registry errors and other junk. But Win7 may still ask you to re-do your activation.
