Best HDD brand?

Western Digital Black is about the best HDD. Beats the others in tests. But it costs more too. The Blue edition is their bread & butter though. It is basically a black but just not quite as fast.

There's been a lot of mergers and acquisitions in the hard drive world in case you haven't noticed. Western Digital bought HGST (Hitachi) and Seagate acquired Samsung's mechanical HD division so it's really only down to those two. The Toshiba drives that you see on most websites are really rebranded Seagate models. So it's kind of one of those "pick your poison" type of deals. I just got a Caviar Blue and it's been a great drive so far - well worth the $55 I paid for it.

I have the 1 TB Seagate ST1000DM003 HDD. It has been a great performer: quiet reliable, VERY fast and cheaper than WD. Highly recommended!
