Deleting windows without deleting data

As the title says, I am wanting to remove windows 7 from my computer without deleting any of my personal data/programs.
My hard drive is only on a single partion so I can't format a partion (I have learnt my lesson).
I have a smaller hard drive that I am going to install windows 7 to and install all my programs/games and recorded videos.

Remove the existing hard drive and put it in an external enclosure.

Install smaller hard drive & install Windows 7 on it.

Plug external enclosure into computer and get your data off it.

As with many things, there's more than one way to skin a cat, so others may well chirp in with alternative solutions.
