Can anyone explain to me the difference between creating a custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel vs. using the different anti-aliasing settings in the Nvidia Inspector?

I get that with custom resolutions you can trick your graphics card into outputting a resolution higher than what your monitor is capable of, but is that equivalent to any certain type of anti-aliasing?

I see all the options in the Nvidia Inspector for super sampling, multi-sampling, etc. But I don't really understand the difference, or impact on performance.

Generally downscaling doesn't do much to help unless you combine it with antialiasing. Downscaling is best saved for example when you are still at the framerate you want to be at after piling on antialiasing.

Downscaling is better than antialiasing alone as it does more than just work on edges. Textures will appear a little sharper, and it will work with transparent items, something that typical MSAA misses.
