I've read that Linux isn't like windows and I can move one install between computers.
I'm just curious to know if Backbox is this way? (not sure if anything changes in this distro that affects it.)
I'd also like to know if I install Backbox to an esata drive it will boot on esata and USB, depending on whatever is plugged in? (I use esata on desktop USB on laptop)
Lastly, would I be able to run this drive not only as a bootable, but also within Vmware player?

More about : esata usb backbox bootable

Try it and see.

I don't really feel comfortable giving too much advice to amateurs asking about distributions that have valid professional use but are not really useful to the average person.

I'm using Backbox to learn the forensics tools and hardware hacking tools, an adventure on par with using Ubuntu for a while. Although I understand the concern, why comment at all if it's not really going to be useful?

My first sentence was the useful bit.

I'm glad that you understand my concern. I wouldn't like to see anyone get themselves into deep trouble playing with hacking tools.

Generally the concern is if you are investigating "hacking" or "forensic" tools then you should already know the Linux basics...

Knowing the basics doesn't mean knowing if a specific distro changes anything. I don't know if these pen testing distros can or do change the affects with moving an install between computers and I'd not think that a basic.

I've already used Backtrack and other distros in VMware. But, I've not really had the desire quite yet to dual boot with it. More or less I wouldn't really benefit from it other than for the purpose of learning (I can't think of anything that would directly benefit me for dual booting my system can't manage in VMware) The point of doing this installation is so I can run it in Vmware and boot directly if I ever so desired. It wasn't until I read very briefly about the tools beyond the pen testing tools that can be useful in many scenarios. If I wanted the OS for Pen testing mainly I would definitely use backtrack. Part of doing this with Backbox is it's said to be better for a general desktop use and utilizing the tools at hand. If that's true I'm not sure. I haven't done much research on this. Nevertheless, I will get to it in time.

I find it amusing how often people will boast their opinions on here, yet so few will actually answer the questions that were asked. I am sure I will find out on my own. But, I come here to save myself the trouble prior to doing so. It's not hard to say yes this will work or no it won't. I'm going to do it regardless of anyone's opinion. As I'm sure many that come here will agree. Some people that post on this forum really need to be more focused on answering questions instead of trying to give their opinions so much. I've seen countless topics get buried or practically taken over by opinionated debating and nobody ends up answering the question. It becomes quite irritating. Especially when they begin to assume things about the person asking said question.

If you do not want to answer the question don't reply at all. I'd rather my threads not be turned into those ones.

Well to be honest all this information is extremely well documented.
man grub, man syslinux or gentoo/ arch/Debian/Ubuntu wiki

Its pretty basic information and I wonder what kind of pen testing you are doing if you can't even look in the man pages

It certainly bothers me that someone who wants to learn more about Linux and "hardware hacking" doesn't have the initiative to actually experiment.

But, ultimately, he is correct. It's rather a waste of time posting here. Why waste my time trying to help people who are too lazy to help themselves and never bother with thanking those who take the trouble to address their questions.

Here we go assuming and opinions again.
I did read into it. But, at this time I'm running off of my phone for internet. So, my digging is limited to such. I've self taught myself a lot of things. I've researched it a little bit here and there. I have and will continue reading the documentation. But, I came here before that as it's a lot of reading in certain areas and I wanted a simple answer to if this would work prior to installing and experimenting and the reading. I've already answered my own question. It did work. But, I have to get the vmware workstation as the free player doesn't support booting off physical discs.

So, thanks again for your useless opinions and acting as if what you said was meaningful at all. Stop trying to assume you know anything about what a person is doing and focus on questions and answers. This is a forum, not Facebook.

Note: I'm more of a hands on learning person. I read documentation to a degree then I take the rest into personal learning until I hit roads and need to read into it more. If I posted a simple question most likely it's too avoid reading something and allowing myself to learn the way I learn best. You perceive it as laziness as most people are. But, it's your ignorance that blinds you to more possibilities.

I will repeat once again. I will experiment. The point of a forum question such as this is to save myself wasting time and trouble if the experiment has already been attempted and does not work. I don't want people to do it for me. But, I also don't need people acting like they have any idea what I am doing, have done, or will do.

The above personal information is something I should NOT have to post to get the answers I need. The fact some of you practically expect such detail of how I work to provide answers is completely inappropriate. But, to insult me based something as small as this really shows just how open your mind is.

I won't be returning to this post anymore.

edit:
"But, ultimately, he is correct. It's rather a waste of time posting here. Why waste my time trying to help people who are too lazy to help themselves and never bother with thanking those who take the trouble to address their questions."

All of the information is already out there. That is absolutely correct. This forum would genuinely be dead and completely useless if everyone thought like this. Some people don't know specifically where to go. Some people may have specific or unusual circumstances and it's absolutely none of your business if that is so. You come here to post your opinion and nobody wants that. It's irrelevant and completely useless. So, keep it off of this forum. You want to help. Actually help otherwise don't post at all. At least not on my threads. You want to post your opinions go back to Facebook. This is a forum meant for helping others, solving problems, and getting answers. Opinions per products and strategies are one thing.
