Suddenly, when starting Adobe Acrobat I receive the error, The application was unable to start correctly (0x00000fd). Click OK to close the application.

I am running a new machine with AMD 64 bit and Windows 8.1.

Solution

The only option would to try and restore the registry hives. If that does not work the only thing that would work would probably be a re-install of the OS, unfortunately. Obviously since you can not do that I am very sorry to say that I can not think of another solution at this time. I apologize and good luck!

If any software fails to start, then its co-dependent libraries may have been overwritten or corrupted. The best way to fix this is to uninstall the program entirely and re-install it.

If that still doesn't help you, its likely a much more serious problem and may necessitate reinstalling windows.

Thank you sir, already tried that, several times, and variations on that theme. Also tried the repair function, the modify function, and repaired the registry. All to no avail.

Try going to CMD with elevated access and run SFC /scannow

0x00000fd means there is most likely system file damage done to your machine, have you tried to repair the computer from the install CD?

I ran the SFC/ scannow and received a very long report. Near the bottom it had several lines that stated:

I then ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, because it can download and repair those files. It stated that it had made all repairs, but the problem still exists. I have not found a method to "repair" Windows 8.1.

Try to 'refresh' Win 8. If you go to the charm bar -> settings -> Change PC settings -> Update & recovery -> Recovery -> Refrsh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started. This will reinstall Windows 8.1 OS without deleting your personal files. It will however, uninstall and delete any installed applications. It will also leave a list of the programs it removed on your desktop after the Refresh is complete. Make sure if you have a laptop that it is plugged into the charger so it does not die, and do not power off the computer during this process.

The only other solution I can think of is to Install windows 8.1 on another drive, disconnect both that drive, and your main OS drive of this system, slave them both to another computer and copy all of windows 8.1 core files from the new install onto the old install. That still doesn't guarantee that when you put the OS drive back in the system that it will work, but it may be one way of refreshing the contents that you haven't tried. If you end up with no other solution you could try this first before reinstalling - I appreciate a lot of money was spent on software so you'll have to make a decision eventually whether to just leave it how it is, and leave that computer without acrobat. There are free alternatives for reading and editing these days.

Couldn't you just transfer the license keys? If you can not transfer the keys you should be able at the least to contact the software company and explain to them what is going on so they can get you a new license key for your software.

MrTuRtLe03, In a few cases, I can get new keys. Transfers are not possible. In some cases, the particular software is no longer in production or being supported. In some cases I knew the developer, and they are now dead. Let's just say, it is not really feasible to reinstall the entire computer.
