Self-build crashing - what haven't I tried?

Hi all

So I've been using my new build but it's been crashing fairly frequently. I've been investigating it for a while trying to figure out what's going on, but no joy. So below I'm going to list details about the problem and what I have tried to fix it. At the end I've included a snippet from my error log and details of each error type. I'm not sure what to do with these but there's plenty of errors happening leading up to the crash! If anyone can suggest further options before I try a full re-installation of Windows, I'd love to hear from you!! Thanks in advance - here are the details:

SPEC
AMD 8320
ASUS M5A97 r2.0 bios 2201
Corsair Venegance 2x4gb
Zotac GTX 760 AMP Edition

SYMPTOMS
- Can go days without happening or can occur 3-4 times in a couple of days.
- Black screen - monitor reads 'no signal'
- Sometimes image stutters before black screen
- Audio goes bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- LEDs & fans keep running as before
- The only solution is to hard reset or power down
- Can occur whilst only browsing web or whilst gaming
- Wierdly, it only started after a couple of weeks. I was running games offline for the build's first couple of weeks as we had a broadband service problem. So the only thing I can think of that changed around the time the crashes started was I started using the web on this machine.

Right, so I'm guessing it's probably not the PSU, because it can happen when load is high or low. For the same reason I'm assuming it's not temperatures. (Of course I can't see temps when it happens because of the blackscreen, but it really shoudn't be, I can play for hours on high-max settings with high-demand games and it cruises at CPU 55-60 GPU 65-70)

Here's what I've tried:
- Staying offline again
- Re-seat network adapter
- Changing adapter slot
- Changing network adapter from PCI card to USB dongle
- Reseat RAM
- Swap RAM
- Memtest86+ 2 passes both modules no errors
- Reseat GPU
- Move GPU to other slot
- Complete driver update for everything
- BIOS update to recommended version for CPU
- Virus scans with preferred suite, firewall settings checked and ok
- Used various tools to detect viruses, malware etc,. no result.

I hate to say this but I think this sounds like a dodgy motherboard. It sounds like your not a newbie with computers so check absolutely every manual and device for timings and compatibility - have you set the RAM to the right speed? Can the RAM handle the timings? Can the CPU handle the speed its being driven relative to the FSB?

I'm sure you've covered all these bases but it never hurts to be absolutely sure. In that vein, I'm sure you've checked your system through

the PSU requirement calculator to check you are most definitely getting all the power you need all the time. Your log initially points to some kind of networking error, but the only kind of networking error that would cause this kind of soft-off I can think of is a (somehow) corrupted Wake-on-LAN event.

Troubleshooting this kind of error is largely like diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a pure process of elimination. You've gone through a great swathe of the process already, checking the memory was a good step to do. Have you done the same for the video memory? It seems unlikely to me but its possible.

In order of probability, I think its: Motherboard, GPU, CPU. You can discount your memory because you've thoroughly tested it. Other devices don't cause these types of errors and the PSU would have to be SERIOUSLY damaging your PC to be causing these kinds of issues.

So check your GPU memory, because at least you can do something about that by replacing the GPU, but if nothing arises (and no one else has a bright idea) I think you could be looking at a new motherboard. Very occasionally, CPUs with very minor defects escape the detection process at the fabrication plant - but its almost unheard of.

Hi Gaymer, thanks for such a quick reply and apologies for a slow response! Lots going on today.

Your GPU ram suggestion is looking good. I'm going to use a stress tester that works like mem86 - out of windows, that is. I was in-game earlier (instead of replying to you - sorry, addicts will be addicts) and there was suddenly a serious drawing problem which basically forced me to leave the game. Actually it was quite cool - reminded me of The Matrix. Big hole in the ocean where my ship should have been, with what looked like water rushing into it!!! But then I went closer and the rendering and textures failed, breaking up to leave a single colour. Plus the waypoint marker didn't activate the next stage... hmm, wonder about that last bit. Why would the GPU do that...? Anyway, there was no slowdown or jerkiness and monitoring says temp maxed at 72. So I wasn't thrashing the card.

I'll try and get the video memory tested over the next couple of days and will report back.

Cheers

Hi again - sorry, haven't managed to do this testing yet. But I am happy to award best answer Gaymer, because regardless of whether or not this solves the problem, my question was basically 'what have I missed'. Your answer points out the logical next thing and therefore is, in my opinion, the best possible answer. It's also the only answer! :) I will still report back on test results when I've done it.
Thanks again.
