Hi, I have 4x2gb ddr3 1600mhz and 2x2gb ddr3 1333 mhz.
currently using 4x2 gb ddr3 1600mhz. Should i stay like this or change it? otherwise am gonna sell the 1333 mhz sticks. And tell the reason too. Thanks in advance.

Dear,

In your case your all RAMs will be running at 1333 MHz. This is the default behavior of the mobo. I would recommend you to have 2x4GB configuration. You'll be using high capacity RAMs in a one dual channel which will give your more bandwidth and improves the performance as well.

From my understanding, the speed (mhz) does increase performance, but not near as much as the volume (GB).

You would get better performance from 12GB at 1333mhz than you would get from 8GB at 1600mhz.

However, your system may not ever be utilizing all 8GB as it is currently set up.

What motherboard are you using? What speeds does it recognize? How many slots does it have? What is the maximum GB recognized by each slot?

What types of programs are you running? Are you doing a lot of high level multi-tasking? Are you gaming?

I will basically do gaming, Bf4 with skype most probably.Motherboard is asus b85m-g. It has 4 slots.

are u saying that i should use all four rams together?

What you really want to calculate is the nanoseconds/latency for each set of sticks. This depends on the CAS latency the are running at (CPU-z can tell you this info). You do CAS latency, lets say 9 for example, and you divide it by the Mhz (1600 Mhz for example). 9/1600 = 0.005625 seconds or 56.3 nanoseconds. assuming each kit totals the same amount of total RAM, this should be the deciding factor between the two sets (which is faster/less nanoseconds).

compare to what it would be using the 1333 sticks. i would say right now i think the 8GB is faster than the 12GB (since it all gets downclocked to match the lowest stick in use). if gaming 8GB is plenty, if rendering large images, or working on big video/hd photos (like...really big..) then 12GB might make sense, but if you havnent encountered any problems with 8 why go to 12? to my understanding with how RAM works, more wont always mean faster, it just allows you to do more at once (side by side apps, load and work on big files etc).
