Hey, just built this PC this past monday, stress tested the cpu with Prime95 for 1 hour with blended test and the temp maxed out at 59C. Just stress tested it again (today is Friday) and it stayed at 57-60, then after 15 min spiked to 69 where i stopped the test. Also, it idles at like 42-45C and i stressed tested it today because earlier it overheated and shut the pc down. Any thoughts as to why this happened?

PC Specs:
Amd FX-8320
EVGA Gtx 760
M5A97 r2.0
Patriot 8gb (single stick)
CoolerMaster HyperTX3 cpu cooler
corsair cx750w psu (80 gold)

Solution

The FX series runs really hot, averaging 50-60C. The eight cores especially reach the higher temps because they aren't designed optimally for heat dissipation, but rather speed, and with speed comes heat.

Your temperatures are fine. Once you reach 65C you should look into your heatsink/thermal paste.

hm, have you checked what speed it is operating at?

Sounds like you've got it on fine, can you post a pic?

Also the tx3 fan shouldn't face the same way as the stock one it shoud look like this:

tx3.jpg

the stock one should be facing the side of the case, whereas the tx3 should face the front or back.

I understand that's not the stock but it's a useful image to describe whati mean.

Reseat the heatsink 90° to the right. Also ensure the fan is on the right. This way you'll have cool air coming in from the front to feed the CPU fan, and the then processed hot air is exhausted through the back.

Currently it's trying to intake air from the top, so the fan is ineffective.

Thats the way i thought it was supposed to go, but the brackets that are on the motherboard and on the cooler dont allow it to be faced any other way (except having the fan facing the graphics card below the cpu). Is there a way to move the brackets??

The brackets should be moveable for either location. The CM mounting crossbar swings and inverts, the instructions show you how it should, and should not, be mounted. See Ashy's picture with the CM, with the fan blowing through the heatsink, then through the fan behind it outside the case. It can be a little fiddly, but it is the proper way to mount it.

I had the same motherboard and the brackets do allow for it.

Ok, I reseated the heatsink the way you said to, temps are like 4-5C lower than average, just played witcher 2 on all high settings for about an hour, getting down to 55 fps, and the cpu temp maxed out at 58. Is that still too hot??
