i7 4770k Installation / Temperatures & Overclock

Hey everyone !

I'm here to share my experiance and get help during my plans and ofcourse suggestions.

As my signature says I got my i7 4770k with G45 Z87 Gaming MSI motherboard. The thing is I sold my old motherboard without getting backplate and screws for EVO212 so I needed to go on road 500km and get those back which was extra money to throw.

I screwed them at the back of mobo, I removed black plastic from motherboard, installed CPU, did small amount of Noctua thermal paste and added EVO212 cooler easier then before since I was for first time installing this on motherboard which was outside of the case.

Also I realized that I have plastics and enough coolers in my room to place 2 fans on EVO212 which I did. I had some issues with cabbles and mounting mobo to case but everything was fine and this time I did placed motherboard on screws, since last time I did that directly on case. Yes retard I agree.

I started my PC and I got some notification about setting up my new devices, I entered into bios, I restarted my PC and I booted in my system. I had to wait like 5 minutes for configuring my devices or something like that loading screen to end but my system was booted !

Now without any tests I just started CoreTemp and I see 20-23c idle on all 4 cores while it's running at 3.9ghz.

In CPU-z I can see that vcore is going from 0.024 till 0.048V ONLY !

Now what I need to do to set my i7 4770k on "default" or I should leave it like this I guess with turbo mode on ? I will need to reinstall my Windows 8 and do all drivers again, I really want to do that so it's not a issue. But after that I would like to OC my CPU till 4.2/4.3 possibly.

First thing first this vcore is really low, is that ok ? Idle temperatures are fine I guess ?

Ok I had Prime95 at my system and I started test.

Running automatically at CPU-Z vcore at 1.200, 2 cores are at 78 while 2 are at lower 70's after couple minutes. Frequency is at 3700 at the moment.

What are safe temps and can someone suggest me some video guide for setting i7 4770k on normal configuration without turbo and this amount of jumping voltage ?

Software monitoring is often times wrong. Your system would not work with 0.024 vcore.

For temperatures, you want to be < ~70 degrees C.

Turbo is a normal feature, you can change it in bios.

Also, you really went 300 miles to get your 212 backplate and screws back?...

I had a friend with me, and we went on a ride with bus so it was fun for a change :) It was like 60$ in both ways, it's really cheap but still nice experiance when you are not going on a ride for a long time. I dont own car for now so its different.

On default BIOS settings with reinstalled OS with fresh chipset drivers voltage is 0.729 - 0.874 and 24/22/24/22c idle on all cores which is really cool since my fx8350 had pretty much same idle temps. When I run Prime95 2 cores are going on 80-82 and other 2 on lower 70's. Could that be a bad thermal paste placement ? I have feeling that I applied littlebit more paste on one side even though overall it's less then what I used to do on AMD (ofcourse I was failing) so this should be enough.

I did on EVO212 push/pull + extra fan at the back to get more air out from EVO212 + one at the top which is 1cm away from EVO again to get air out. Overall CPU should be cooled properly as much as I can with this sort of air cooler.

Now my goal is to get static voltage without jumping up and down and 4.2/4.3ghz if it's possible. If I'm getting 80c temperature on 1.200 voltage that should be enough after all for that overclock (atleast I hope).
