I just received my new hard drive today can I check to if its working before I install it in my computer thanks

You can try connecting it externally using a USB to SATA cable, docking station or drive enclosure. That way you could check to see if it shows up in disk management. You will probably be asked to format the drive. Once it is formatted you could try writing some sample files to the disk.

I do have a usb to sata kit it worked out great thanks a lot

just like to update what I have ok (usb 2.0 to sata/ide hard drive adapter from sabrent)
just started on toms hardware yesterday love it so far thanks again (frank)
