He is missing some bandwith, but not a ton.
I have never seen a benchmark that gives dual channel anymore than a 20% increase, and most are in the 10% range.

Ah I guess I'm just used to memory intensive applications. Gaming doesn't really suffer from single channel operation too badly, but it seems silly to leave performance on the table when there are such high end components in a system.

I agree, I can't bring myself to use 1 stick, no matter how small the gain.
I was expecting, when Dual Channel first came out, that it would double bandwidth, and was sorley disappointing.

Dual-Channel does double the bandwidth between the memory and CPU, but it only results in significant gains if the CPU couldn't communicate fast enough over a single stick of memory.
If you have a modern CPU and one stick of memory only you are very likely to be bottlenecked though it may be under 20% depending on the hardware involved. Still, there IS likely a bottleneck.

Don't buy a GTX680. The Asus GTX770 is almost EXACTLY the same card in a 2-slot form factor.
Prices on GTX680's are probably even HIGHER than a GTX770.

As well as a second stick of DDR3 RAM (identical preferably) to prevent the slight bottleneck a single stick gives.
