Hi!
So me and my friend wants to play minecraft together, and for doing so I have to port forward. I have a ASUS RT-N66U, and a good internet connection. I know the basics on how to port forward, and I have done it by logging on to my router, and presing wan and then port forward. I port forward the ports 25565 on both TCP and UDP and I enter my own local IP.
Here is a picture of how I have done it:
http://gyazo.com/b0710bbe456da51b9e91c58f2f8d3775
(Its in norwegian, but you get the basics, look at the ports for MC)

So everything seems like it should be workin fine, however it is not. I am 100% sure that the problem with my server has to do with my ports not beeing opened. If I use a online checker to see if the ports are open, it tells me that they are closed.

I have tried to turn of my firewall for the router, without any resoults. Also, I am not sure if this is important or not, but my modem is a ARRIS something.

Any help would be apriciated, since I have no idea what to do :)

Solution
i know this is an old thread, but for others who are having this problem...

in able to open ports with port forwading, you need to disable the firewall.
this does not disable the NAT protection of the router, only the packet/url filtering firewall.

i would like to find a way to configure the firewall to be enabled and still use port forwarding, but..
the firewall on each computer will have to do.

Try to temporarily disable your PC firewall and any virus protection program you may have. On your router under, WAN, port forwarding, make sure the radio button is checked that says enable port forwarding. Also, where it says port range and local port, both boxes should contain 25565. If you put you local ip in the DMZ setting does it show the port is open with the online checker?

So I disabled windows defender and firewall, still no open ports. The enable port forwarding button is checked. I also tried to enter in my local ip into DMZ, 25565 is still closed. For some reason I randomly checked the port 80, wich turned out to be open.
Another thing to add is that in my home we have a second router hooked up to the modem (a apple extreme) I tried portforwarding on that router with a mac, and still the ports are closed, could this have something to do with my network provider?

If you entered your local IP in your DMZ and the port is still closed, you may have to turn off the firewall on your providers modem/router. The arris could also be a router since your have multiple ports to plug in your router AND the apple extreme. Try typing 192.168.0.1 and see if it pulls up your Arris device, look at the bottom of your arris it should have a sticker with the default user name and password. When logged in, disable the firewall and check port again.

I am pretty sure the ARRIS is just a modem, I use a splitter in order to have multiple routers. I can log in to the ARRIS by entering 192.168.100.1 but I havent found antything like a firewall or for portforwarding. Thanks for the answer tough :)

Well the only other suggestion I have is to temporarily disconnect the apple extreme, on your other router, under WAN, Internet connection, make sure Enable NAT, and Enable UPnP are checked yes. I don't think it is an issue with your ISP. Also port 80 is always open. Port 80 is what allows you to connect to the web.

I have been having the same problem and did everything I can and things still wont work. I disabled the fire wall on my router and my pc, yet the port stays closed.

Old thread, but I just went through this with a client that has Asus Router.....

FYI Asus Routers

DO NOT SET INTERNAL PORT, leave it blank and the port set in the first PORT RANGE window will work with or without firewall active.
Setting the INTERNAL PORT will redirect the internal port and you do NOT WANT to redirect in most cases.
This is documented in the ASUS manual but not very obvious.

On most routers to span a range of port address you would normally use a "-" but on AUSUS you need to use a ":" (hard colon)
examples:
To span a range of open ports 8000 to 8050 you would use 8000:8050
To open multiple ports you would use 22,4151,8000:8050

Hope this helps

My son is trying to set up a Minecraft Server and I am trying to get the settings right on my Asus RT AC66u, so far with no success. A question about your comment relating to "internal" port. I am trying to set this up under the WAN menu, Port Forwarding tab. The categories where you can type in things are: Service Name, Port Range, Local IP, and Local Port. There is no "Internal Port". Is the "Local Port" the Internal Port you are referring to? Thanks.
