I wonder if its possible to make something like a cloud storage server using my router and hook up a hard drive via USB, so the whole family can connect and take for example a movie and stream it? :)

Using a RT-N66U Gigabit Router Dual-Band Wireless-N900

Thanks :)

Servers have been doing this for decades, why they called it 'The Cloud' now and make a big deal of it is a mystery to me.

yes you can easily do this. Have you read your Routers owners manual?
Hint: Look for the Asus AiCloud section.
