XP suddenly requires reactivation

I Have a Dell desktop with Windows XP for over 2 years , now I get a message saying I have to reactivate my windows software because I have supposedly made software or hardware changes to the machine. Well I've been adding software programs and have changed monitors and dvd drives before and never got this message, why now?
So from now on I can never change anything on my computer or I won't be able to get a reactivation code when microsoft discontinues support for XP? This is like GM selling you a car with a chip that will kill the engine whenever you change the tires unless you get a new code from them, then they stop supporting the car so you have to buy a new one, not because the old car is not capable of running but because they need to sell new cars.

Just reactivate if you haven't done so.

As for after Microsoft stops support, well I expect they won't bother asking to Reactivate though I don't know exactly how the software works.

Anyway it's a painless process. On Windows 7 I only had to click one button.

Thanks all for your responses. Don"t think I wil be giving up XP because the powers that be decide that its "too old", it performs all the tasks I use it for (digital audio workstation) and is not connected to the internet so I don"t have to worry about hackers. Special thanks to ex bubblehead for the info.

I've got 192khz,32bit sound quality. Any improvement on that is inaudiable to the human ear. I have used wiindows 7 & 8 enough to know that its not an improvement in my book. Is my proceesor going to stop working because my operating system is "too old"?

It's not going to 'stop working'. However, Win 7 & 8 are actually better performers than XP. On appropriate hardware, of course.

But if your XP is never connected to the net, then you probably won't have a problem.
