Second GPU on Maximus Hero VI

Hi
I have an Asus Maximus Hero VI with Sapphire R9 290x and Cosair's HX850 850W PSU.

I recently got a spare 290x from my brother that I want to add to my desktop for mining. However when I install it into the second PCI_Ex16 slot, BIOS doesn't seem to detect it even though it works fine in the first PCI_Ex16 slot. Maybe the second PCI_Ex16 slot on the mobo is bad but how to be sure. Hard to tell. Never really used the second slot before. In BIOS, it says "Not present" when the second card is installed in x16 slot and connected to the PSU. By the way in dual gpu setup, I don't have a second monitor attached. I know Windows may have an issue finding it but BIOS should, right? For Windows, I was planning to get a dummy plug with 68 ohm resistors.

Anyways, since I don't really care about x16 slot or data transfer speed to the GPU, my question is: can I use a powered 1x to 16x riser to just hook up the card on the 1x PCI-E slot instead?

Sorry newbie here. Thanks!

yes 850 watts is enough for two R9 290X's, but pushing it close. Sounds like a faulty slot if nothing is detected in that slot, you may have to RMA the board.

I wouldn't bother with the riser, It has to be the slot, if it is a bad fit then it's a problem with the slot also, but If both cards work in the first slot then it isn't a card problem.

Yes did swap the cards. They both work in first PCI_Ex16 slot but not detected by BIOS in second one. Should I try a 16x to 16x riser, just in case they are not making a good fit into the slot (they do click the PCI-e lock)

Also, I'm thinking if my power supply (Cosair's HX850 850W PSU) can pack enough power for two R9 290x? Wasn't really looking to overclock. Processor is non-overclocked 4770k.
