The windows website is really confusing me so ill ask here instead. I am eligible for the student discount for windows but I am building my own computer and want to know I need to already have windows 7 before getting this

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/productID.288492900?srccode=cii_201700441&cpncode=34-143400427-2&WT.mc_id=PLA_AU_googlePLA (Sorry for the big link)

It says on the website, "Important: Windows 8.1 full version is for Windows 7 users only." Does this mean I have to buy windows 7 or have to buy the full version of windows 8???

Solution

Reads to me as if you need to be running an activated version of Windows in order to download what appears to be the Upgrade version of 8/8.1 Perhaps acquire an XP install from Ebay, then update to 8 then again to 8.1....

Damn what a pain. Is there any other way for me to get it? Preferably with the student discount?

Can't find one, none in the UK either. Ask around your friends/family to see if anyone has a 'dead' XP or Vista machine you could use the Product key from...still a pain, but that's a good price, alternative is OEM at around $160AUS
