I will be building a PC for my grandfather. He likes the Max Payne games, so PC has to be able to run Max Payne 3, but his monitor is 1024*768.
CPU: I initially wanted to go with the AMD A4-3300, but I think some used Core 2 Duos could offer a better price/ performance ratio that. I was thinking of the E8400. What socket does it use?
GPU: I was thinking of an AMD R7 240, but I think used 8800 GTS's, GT's, GTX's and Ultras are faster and cheaper.
RAM: I chose 4GB RAM for around 30 dollars, but could I find used RAM for less money?
HDD: He probably doesn't need more than 250GB
I want to keep this build cheap. Please, give me advice.

Does this mean that I need to use DDR2 RAM with the E8400 CPU?

for the build I posted...you can be cheap and foolish or cheap and have a system that last a few years and can be upgraded if needed. for the cpus the intel 775/1155 are end of life. you may be able to get a 1155 mb and cpu combo for a few years till the stock runs out. your better off spending a little more for the newer b87 or h81 mb. then if needed you can drop in an i3 or faster cpu if needed. your looking at 20.00 more for a 500g to 1tb new hard drive. look at the warranty of the hard drive. most of the newer drives are 2 years unless it higher end black drives from wd that have 5 years.
for the money the 750ti is one of the best cards or the 750. it the replacment of the 650ti and uses just the onboard pci bus voltage (60w). so it does not need a large power supply to run a gaming rig. I would also toss in a wifi card so that you can have the pc set up any where in his home. the newer cpu are a lot faster then the 775. if you need to cut down more on the price look at h61 mb and 1155 cpu. there not much slower then the 1150 cpu.

That is too expensive for what he will be using it, I already have a case and an optical drive, 8800GT's can run Max Payne 3 and the E8400 is faster than the Celeron G1820.

My grandfather uses his computer for word processing and he usually plays exclusively Max Payne 3. He has been using 1GB RAM for a while. He would not have much use for a 750 Ti considering he is playing at 1024 * 768. He will probably not upgrade his PC anytime soon, unless it gets really slow in which case I will replace it for him.
