Are there any AMD alternatives to the i5 4760?

AMD processors are so much cheaper than intel processors, so I was looking for a good gaming CPU that would cost less than the i5.

Or, would it just be worth it to pay the extra money to get an i5? I was planning on using a gtx 760, and if it meant going intel for better performance, I would do it.

Thank you for any advice, this is my first time making a PC, and I have a lot to learn :)

Dead in 2015 maybe. We have AM3+ till at least then now. If you get a 970 UD3P, you can get a good overclock on them. The 8+2...
amd is cheaper because they perform worse. it is that simple. amd would happily charge as much as intel for their cpus if they could justify it.

consider that a decent motherboard for an 8 core amd cpu would run around 130.00 or more (just about any other boards less than that have an alarming amount of issues reported using an 8 core cpu), also consider that the i5 4440 + a decent H87 mobo would run around the same price as an 8350 + gigabyte 970 UD3 motherboard (the only 970 board worth using with an 8 core) and it would out perform it.... you'd be better off going with the i5

save how? its a 200.00 cpu and lets assume you go with the gigabyte UD3... the i5 4440 would out perform the 8350 (at stock) and cost around the same. now, the 4570 is a bit more expensive but the 8350 can't touch it unless you overclock it significantly, and good luck doing that on a 970 UD3 board without overheating the VRM.

you could make an argument for an 8320 if it is on sale, however the money saved wouldn't be worth buying into a dead platform in my opinion.

In my opinion, no. i5-4760 is a very good all around processor and it is only $20 more expensive than FX-8350 on newegg. So the cost difference is rather insignificant, and you actually get a faster CPU. The i5 slaughters the FX-8350 in single threaded applications while the extra four cores allow AMD to keep up only on a few highly multi-threaded applications. The 8-core FX is more evenly matched with the Ivy Bridge Core i5s. And the AMD CPUs cheaper than FX-8350 are not even in the same league.

That said, the Intel solution is faster. It all depends on what you want to do with your system. If you intend to do a lot while you game, record your game play or do any kind of video editing, the FX 8320 is a good idea. For just a straight up gaming rig, the i5 would be faster most of the time for sure.

A platform is dead when there is nothing new coming out for it. Steamroller is not going to AM3+. There is nothing planned for AM3+. The FX line is not getting anything in 2014. Show me an official roadmap that shows AM3+ getting anything this year and I'll retract my statement. Trust me, I don't like the thought. I was really hoping to see what an 8 core FX steamroller could do, but it isn't coming.
