So I just got a new DirectCU II R9 290 and I'm overclocking it with afterburner and furmark. I cranked the voltage to +100 mV and +50% power limit and set it to 1100/1300. When I up the voltage the core clock throttles right out of the gate during a five minute Furmark test before temps even start rising. Why is this?

You should set your power limit to the max it will go. I believe by setting it to 50 you're only allowing 50% of its stock power to be used. Try 100-110%.. Whichever it'll allow.

By 50% I meant the highest the slider on afterburner will go, which I think translates to 150%

Turn off v-sync...

that was happening to me in tombraider...with vsync on gpu was throttling...maybe because gpu is waiting to send more frames to screen

I have the same problem as gravytrain, and none of the solutions are really a problem. I run furmark without vsync, and i have set my power in GPUTweak to 150% (Or 50%). I have a Asus R9290DC2OC, and if I OC it to even 1100 core 1300 memory with +50mv, it starts throttling at anything above 68 C.
