So i am confused when people say that a card that has a 3.0 x16 pci slot has "backwards" compatability with pci 2.0 x16 slot. Assuming that i am plugging in a 3.0 card into a 2.0 slot, does that mean that the card will fit in the slot litterly backwards or will it fit the slot the same as a 2.0 card would?

It means it goes in the same way, just that the card can work with older versions, so 3.0 cards will work in a 2.0 slot, and sometimes in 1.1 and 1.0 slots.
