new graphics card installation

im looking to swap out my graphics card, does the new card have to go into the same pci-e slot the others going to come out of?

also any tips would be greatly appreciated

Yes. If the rear of your case goes graphics card, space, sound card, space, then the new graphics card will fit in the top PCI-Ex16 slot. It may seem a bit snug and limit air flow a bit, but it will fit. Still a far better option that the lower PCI-Ex16 (x4) slot.

thanks for your reply, the thing is it can't go in the same slot as the current graphics as the sound card is in the slot below and the new graphics is double thickness. The other pci-e slot on my mobo is on the bottom, meaning the fans would hang off the bottom of the mobo, will this be a problem?

You really want that graphics card in the top PCI-E slot. The other slots are often limited in throughput (it may read as PCI-Ex16 (x4)). Rather than running at the full x16 throughput, the lower slots can be limited to one quarter the throughput.

Probably a better solution, assuming the sound card is a PCI-Ex1 sound card, would be to move the sound card to the lower PCI-Ex16 slot (it's fully compatible) and installing the graphics card into the top PCI-E slot. Just to make sure, could you give us the model number of your motherboard?

the motherboard i have is: Gigabyte GA-F2A85XM-D3H A85X Socket FM2 VGA DVI HDMI 7.1 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard

my sound card is just pci not pci-e and i only have the 1 pci slot, the mother board specs does say PCI-Ex16

this is the graphics card im thinking of getting: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

Based on that motherboard, this should work without a problem. Your expansion slots line up as follows from top to bottom:

PCI-Ex16
PCI-Ex1
PCI
PCI-Ex16 (x4)

Now you stated that the sound card was installed in the slot directly below the top PCI-Ex16. If this is the case, then it's a PCI-Ex1 sound card and can be moved to the lower PCI-Ex16 (x4) slot and the new graphics card can be installed in the top PCI-Ex16 slot.

You also stated that the sound card is just a PCI card. If this is the case, then the card is not installed in the slot directly below the top PCI-Ex16 slot and there is enough room there for you to install your new graphics card.

looking at pictures from the web of my motherboard (hard to see in real life with everything on it) the port below me top PCI-E slot is a LPT port, on the back of the case there is a empty expansion slot between the current graphics card and the sound card, your saying the new graphics card (above) will fit?
