Hi,

Does upgrading of the BIOS indirectly boost's the performance of the computer?

What is a VIA chipset? How to get its latest version?

What is an ATA100 controller? How to check an apply for its latest drivers?

BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 6.05, 12-08-2010

Your best bet is to go to the Support page for your system manufacturer and find the Drivers and Firmware section for your system.

The VIA chipset is the chipset on your motherboard excluding the processor and memory. This chipset basically makes everything work. Intel, nVidea, SIS, etc. are other companies that make chipsets for computer motherboards. Over the years, as motherboards became more and more complex and some components became standard, it made things much simpler to combine standard components and miniaturize them into single chips. As more components were added, these became chipsets.

An ATA100 controller is the controller for the hard drive and some removable disk drives (CD, DVD, Zip). If memory serves there were ATA33, ATA66, ATA100 and ATA133. The number represents the burst transfer rate between the controller and drive in megabits per second. The latest drivers for your ATA100 controller should be there with the BIOS updates. Upgrading the BIOS doesn't usually boost performance. It usually just fixes problems and adds support for newer optional hardware (CPU, memory chips, expansion cards). If you're not having problems and aren't planning to add/upgrade hardware I wouldn't bother updating the BIOS. Updating the drivers is a good idea, though.
