IMO replace the cpu and mb with AMD
FX 6300 + Asrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0

You can drop the psu to 500 watts

Performance will be slighty worse in older games , but better in new games and especially in online play

Lower your video card cost to something like a 660 and put a bit more into a processor otherwise it will bottle neck imo. Try gettin a 4670k i5. the 660 is good as a budget card that can run most new title in 1080p, ultimate at 40fps.

You mean replace just the MoBo :p  it has the 6300 on there :p

And yeah, the card could be lowered, depends how future proofed you want the build, and if you'd rather buy a CPU in the future, or a GPU in the future.

Post some builds guys! Interact xD I need to learn some more!

(Keep in mind gaming is roughly 80% GPU in most cases.)

couple things....

switch psu to FX 6300
go with the Asrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 mobo
XFX 550w Pro psu from newegg is $26. for that price its a must have.
not a huge fan of PNY, they are decent, ok, fine, good enough. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA would be a better choice for performance/cooling/sound
spend the $30, get a cpu cooler, hyper212 EVO is perfect for this cpu with mild-good overclock

Updated build with better board, you wont have a bottleneck, look at the post I linked above and you'll see the debate back and forth. But I doubt you will.

I have no idea what a FX 6300 PSU is xD and I doubt he'll need an OC, but if he wants to pump the extra $30 bucks he can.

a GTX 660 is not gonna touch BF4 or Crysis3 at anything close to Ultra. It'll be lucky to get low-medium to get 40fps, and multiplayer... expect 20's. The only reason I say these games.. next year they are going to demand more, and more etc, the only way to 'futureproof' (laugh) something like a high dollar unit like a gpu is to go big, and I mean as much as you can beg-buy-borrow-steal-swindle BIG. Gaming is mostly about the gpu and some about the cpu, on average, and an AMD FX chip can be upgraded for a whole lot less money lost 6 months from now, than upgrading an ancient 660. a top of the line FX 9370 is $250... whats a GTX 780 ti cost?

If I was replying to your comment I would have used the reply option as Im doing now .

I would not recommend the MSI 970 motherboards . They are known to be prone to failures of the VRM's which can either suddenly stop working or catch fire
